Online Military Program FAQs

Yes, Indiana Wesleyan University is proud to be regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

IWU gratefully extends military preferred pricing to active duty, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserves, retirees, honorably discharged veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, DoD and DHS civilian employees, and dependent children with transferred benefits.

A VA Application must be completed by all students who qualify for military benefits. This process can be completed by visiting www.gibill.gov and clicking on "Apply for Benefits".

The application process will help you to determine your best benefit, tell you what paperwork will be needed, allow you to choose your school, compare the programs, and apply, all online.

Once the application has been completed, please contact your VA certifying official for more information.

If you desire to transfer part or all of your benefits to your family members, military students are encouraged to complete a Transfer Education Benefit request (TEB).

Upon approval of the transfer, family members may apply to use the transferred benefit with the VA by completing VA form 22-1990e.

Yes, IWU is proud to be a Yellow Ribbon Institution.

To receive benefits under the Yellow Ribbon Program:

  • You must be eligible for the maximum benefit rate (100%) under the Post 9/11 GI Bill®
  • You must not be on active duty or a spouse transferee of an active duty member
  • Your school must agree to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which Indiana Wesleyan University proudly does!
  • Your school must have not offered Yellow Ribbon to more than the maximum number of individuals stated in their participation agreement. Currently, Indiana Wesleyan University does not have a cap on students who can utilize the Yellow Ribbon Program.
  • Your school must certify your enrollment to VA, including Yellow Ribbon program information, if the student qualifies for the program and their tuition costs exceed the national maximum per academic year. Students in the adult program are certified with the VA on a per class basis, while students in the traditional program are certified on a semester basis.

No. Applying to IWU is free!

Yes, IWU offers tests for college credit from two sources, CLEP and DSST. 

Students must confirm test selections with an IWU Academic Advisor before registering for and taking a test. Tests may not duplicate preexisting credits and must meet individual degree requirements.

Most of IWU’s courses are asynchronous, meaning there are no set days or times you must be in class.

You can work toward completing course requirements on your timeline, but must meet the due dates set forth in the course syllabus.

Yes, IWU is honored to comply with The Higher Education Opportunity Act, enacted on August 13, 2008, which states that a university may not deny admission or readmission to a service member for reasons relating to that service.

The service member qualifies if:

  • the school is given notice of absence for service,
  • the cumulative length of absence does not exceed five years, and
  • the student gives notice of his or her intent to return

Students will be promptly readmitted in the next class (or classes) in a program, will qualify for priority/early registration, and may not be denied re-enrollment in a class based on class size.

Active duty members, reserve and national guard members who have been called to active duty of any branch of the U.S. military, or who have been or are deployed, are eligible to drop from any or all classes with full tuition refund.

Those members who wish to drop classes must provide copies of orders or a signed letter from their education office or command element to the Office of Student Services. The Office of Student Services will verify that the dates of the deployment conflict with the course schedule.

The deployment dates must fall within the start and end dates of the course or courses.

The short answer is yes. Because there are so many different chapters dealing with GI Bill education benefits, IWU encourages you to contact the VA to talk with an expert about your specific benefits.

Knowing your benefits will make it much easier when you talk with a VA certifying officer here at IWU.

Quick tip: We suggest calling the VA first thing in the morning to avoid long hold times.

Yes, IWU can provisionally accept you to your program based on unofficial transcripts, but official transcripts are required in order to be fully registered for class. Your base education office can assist you with this or you can request your JST online.

The best place to start is at your base education center. They are experts and will assist you with sending your official Joint Service Transcript (JST) or CCAF Transcript to IWU and assist in printing an unofficial copy for your records. You can also request your JST online.

Though the Air Force does not currently provide an option for sending CCAF transcripts electronically, you’ll find several options for ordering them here: Air Force Transcripts

Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process and restrictions and this money is usually paid directly to the institution by your service branch. IWU encourages you to speak with your base education office about TA so you fully understand its uses.

Active duty members may elect to use the GI Bill "Top-Up" in addition to their service-provided TA to cover high cost courses.

We encourage you to visit your base education office to speak with a representative about your TA benefits as each service branch has its own process. The following links can be used to apply online:

Military spouses are not eligible for military tuition assistance.

However, there are programs, such as MyCAA, designed to assist military spouses with their educational goals.

The My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) Scholarship Program is a workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing a license, certification, or associate degree in a portable career field and occupation.

Sign up for MySECO (Spouse Education and Career Opportunities), which focuses on education and career preparation for military spouses.

Spouses of service members on active duty in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2 who can start and complete their coursework while their military sponsor is on Title 10 military orders, including spouses married to members of the National Guard and Reserve Components in these same pay grades.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.

You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill®.

Some of the benefits the Post 9/11 GI Bill® may include:

  • Your full tuition and fees directly to the school for all public school in-state students
    • For those attending private or foreign schools, tuition and fees are capped at the national maximum rate
  • A monthly housing allowance
  • An annual books & supply stipend
  • A one-time rural benefit payment

Indiana Wesleyan University complies with this act in accordance with the following:

Academic:

  • Students are not required to reapply and are not charged a readmission fee upon return.
  • Students are readmitted at the same academic status (program enrollment status, number of completed credit hours, academic standing) before deployment. Students may return under the catalog that was in effect before deployment. Student may find differences in their programs or the catalog if the programs are no longer offered, or changes have occurred due to external accrediting bodies, licensing board or other external agencies.
  • Leave time does not count toward the total time required to earn the degree.
  • Students will be promptly readmitted in the next class or classes in a program, will qualify for priority/early registration, and may not be denied re-enrollment in a class based on class size.

Financial:
Students are required to complete a Military Leave of Absence Request. When the request is approved, students’ accounts will be adjusted as necessary.

Financial Aid:
Indiana Wesleyan University is committed to assisting military students in navigating the impact that active duty will have on financial aid. It is important that each student have conversation with the Financial Aid office to ensure proper paperwork and processes are covered as it relates to a leave of absence.

Students with federal financial aid, federal loan obligations, or military tuition assistance must contact their lenders and/or the military education office to ascertain their loan repayment status or repayment of tuition assistance during the leave of absence.
