What will I Learn in this Science of Reading and Literacy Instruction Master’s Degree Program?

Candidates in this degree program will complete 12 hours of coursework specific to Science of Reading and 18 hours of coursework meant to deepen their proficiency in the general education classroom at the grade level in which they currently practice. The reading courses deepen content and pedagogical content knowledge related to the foundations of SOR, allow candidates to understand and demonstrate appropriate and contextual use of assessment, analyze and apply instructional practices in teaching phonics, language structure, comprehension and writing, and apply SOR instruction to a diversity of students in early childhood, elementary, and special education classrooms.

The courses related to general education teaching provide participants with methods and materials to strengthen their teaching ability and help their own students learn, including those from diverse backgrounds, deepening their understanding and practice of culturally responsive teaching, ethics and faith, and action research and technology tools. Upon completion of a culminating classroom action research project, candidates will better understand how to lead other teachers in doing school action research. Program graduates can expect to be prepared to function as a K-12 literacy coach or reading specialist. Field work requiring access to a classroom or students is also an important part of this program.
